1. Controller and contact
Motif is responsible for personal data processed for the Motif product. In this Policy, “Motif”, “we”, “us”, and “our” refer to the product and its operator. Privacy and account requests may be sent to support@getmotif.page.
2. Scope
This Policy covers the Motif website, Windows desktop application, Google Sign-In, licence and subscription services, support, and optional connected features. Eligibility to use Motif is governed by the Terms of Service.
3. Local-first information
Motif is local-first. Music-library information, artwork, collections, notes, workflow history, settings, downloads, and temporary playback files are primarily kept on your computer. Motif reads folders only after you choose them and does not create a permanent cloud library of your music.
Local information remains under your control until you remove it, clear application data, or uninstall Motif. Information leaves your computer only when needed for a feature you choose, an account or licence operation, security, support, or an action such as sending, uploading, publishing, synchronising, or importing.
4. Account, licence, and computers
Google Sign-In provides the email address, account identifier, sign-in status, and basic profile information needed to recognise your Motif account. Motif does not receive your Google password.
Motif processes licence status, subscription status, an application-generated device identifier, computer name, operating system, application version, activation and revocation status, and ordinary security and request records to provide access, enforce the three-computer limit, protect accounts, and prevent sharing or fraud.
5. Purchases and subscriptions
Motif purchases are sold through Stripe Managed Payments. Link, LLC, a Stripe company, is the merchant of record. Link and Stripe process payment, billing, tax, fraud-prevention, receipt, refund, and dispute information as independent controllers under the Link Privacy Policy.
Motif receives the Google email entered in “Gmail for Motif Account” and ordinary customer, subscription, invoice, charge, refund, dispute, plan, price, currency, renewal, cancellation, and payment-status information needed to provide and manage access. Motif does not receive or store your full card details.
6. Optional connected services
- Gmail: sends only the recipients, message, and attachments you confirm. Motif does not use this permission to read your inbox.
- YouTube: uploads the video, title, description, thumbnail, visibility, and publishing choices you confirm.
- Google Drive: uses the limited drive.file permission, not read-only access to your whole Drive. Motif can open only the files and folders you explicitly select in Google Picker, for browsing, playback, and downloads you choose. Motif does not see the rest of your Drive and does not edit or delete Drive files.
- Dropbox: provides read-only folder and file access for browsing, playback, and downloads you choose. Motif does not edit or delete cloud files.
- Discord: provides the account, server, channel, message, attachment, and delivery information needed for actions you choose.
- Telegram: the login session remains on your computer; selected content and actions are handled directly with Telegram.
- BeatStars: uses a dedicated local browser profile for user-directed listing, upload, and publishing actions. Motif does not receive your BeatStars password, recovery code, or two-factor secret.
Connections are optional. Disconnecting stops new Motif requests and removes the saved connection where possible. It does not undo messages, uploads, publications, or information independently retained by the provider or recipient.
7. Motif on Instagram
Motif operates the Instagram account @motif.wav. The account is managed through a Meta app connected to it, which Motif uses to publish Motif posts and to read and reply to direct messages sent to @motif.wav.
When you send a direct message to @motif.wav, Motif processes:
- Your Instagram username and the account identifier that Meta provides to Motif’s app for your account.
- Profile information that Meta makes available with your message, such as your name and profile picture.
- The content of your messages, including text, links, and attachments, with their timestamps, and Motif’s replies.
This information is used only to read and answer your messages, provide support and information about Motif, keep the history of the conversation, publish and manage Motif’s own posts, and protect the account from spam and abuse. Motif does not sell it, use it for advertising, or combine it with a Motif account unless you ask, for example to resolve a support request.
Conversation information is kept only as long as needed for these purposes and is deleted on request. Instagram and Meta process information on their platform under their own terms and policies; deleting information held by Motif does not delete messages stored by Instagram. Instructions for deletion requests are on the Data Deletion page.
8. Google API data
Motif uses information received from Google APIs only to provide the user-facing feature you request, maintain security, provide support, or comply with law. Motif does not sell Google user data, use it for advertising, or use it to train general-purpose artificial-intelligence or machine-learning models.
Motif's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs to any other app will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
9. Purposes and legal bases
- Provide the account, subscription, licence, downloads, support, and features you request.
- Perform the agreement and take steps you request before or during use.
- Protect Motif, users, connected services, payments, and accounts from fraud, abuse, and security threats.
- Comply with accounting, tax, payment, dispute, and other legal obligations.
- Use consent where a connection or applicable law requires it.
10. Service providers and disclosures
Motif uses providers for hosting, authentication, database, storage, payment, security, communications, support, and user-selected connected services. They receive only the information needed for their role and process it under their own obligations.
Information may also be disclosed when required by law, to protect rights and security, to handle payments or disputes, or as part of a legitimate business transfer with appropriate protection. Motif does not sell or rent personal data and does not use it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
11. Retention
Account, licence, subscription, security, support, and connection records are kept only while needed to provide and protect Motif, administer a request or dispute, and meet tax, accounting, fraud-prevention, and other mandatory obligations. Optional provider credentials are removed when the connection is disconnected, subject to bounded backups and security records.
12. Security
Security is a core operational responsibility. Motif maintains and improves technical and organisational safeguards to protect accounts, connection information, payments, and personal data. Users should protect their devices, Google accounts, connected services, and backups.
13. Your choices and requests
You can choose folders, disconnect optional services, revoke provider access, sign out, clear local data, remove downloads, and uninstall Motif. You may request access, correction, export, restriction, objection, or deletion of eligible backend account data at support@getmotif.page.
Step-by-step instructions for deleting your data, including information from conversations with @motif.wav on Instagram, are available at https://getmotif.page/data-deletion.
Motif verifies account ownership before acting. Eligible deletion requests are completed without undue delay and normally within 30 days. Records required for tax, accounting, fraud prevention, security, disputes, or another mandatory obligation may be retained. Local device data remains under your control.
Mandatory privacy rights, including the right to lodge a complaint with a competent supervisory authority, remain available. Manifestly unfounded, excessive, fraudulent, or abusive requests may be refused or charged for as permitted.
14. Changes
This Policy may change when Motif, its data use, connected services, or legal obligations materially change. Material changes will be communicated before they apply where required. Questions may be sent to support@getmotif.page.
